Irene Papas worked with Anthony Quinn several times but this was the second (and last) collaboration of Papas and Raf Vallone, who starred in The Desperate Ones (1967), about Polish refugees trying to enter Afghanistan. Other than those two, I can't say great about the 3 or so other battle scenes (compared to these two).The overall effect of battle senes is though quite satisfying.The cast of this film, doesn't lack big-names like Irene Papas and Sir John Gielgud but the roles were inconsequential as Mukhtar's friends. He tried with Omar Muhktar but I am sure that he would have done much better with Salahadin. Personally, I call it "realistic" and "not unnecessarily toned down". It should not surprise that recently the former Prime Minister Berlusconi said that Mussolini never did any harm to anybody - probably not considering some hundred thousands Lybians casualties. I’m surprised none of my mutuals on Letterboxd have seen this, but it’s insightful in giving us a different perspective on Italy’s reign during the second world war, and to the barbaric brutality and the inhumanely mindless and idiotic acts carried out by the cruel Axis powers of the war. The music is an epic, orchestral score. The action scenes are pulled off with considerable élan. I caught it on a matinée and was captivated throughout the whole movie. By the end, you are given a true sense of scale to the operation that few war movies ever approach, and you see both sides lose a piece of their soul when the fighting ends. The one takeaway is that the fascist general keeps referring to how history will justify what they're doing and absolve them of all wrongdoing -- which is kind of true, at least the fascists of today will debase themselves to relitigate silly points of history, and so will the fascists of tomorrow, et cetera. But the Butcher of Ethiopia and Libya uses a dirty war against the natives, slaughtering children, women and aged people, to subdue Mukhtar. The movie tell us the true story of Omar Mukhtar, a Libian guerrilla fighter who fought against the Italians who occupied Libia before WW 2. You will be surprised with what this movie has to offer. From God we come, and unto God we shall return. Still a good movie but I'd probably only recommend highly if you were really interested in the subject.
It was notorious within the movie industry for the sheer magnitude of the amount of money it lost.
