It is recommended that the reader know about China prior to reading this book. Get this from a library! The world is changing for two girls in China in the 1970s. This book was recommended to me by Middle School teacher at an NCTA sponsored gathering; my initial sense was that this text might be too simplistic for the High School level, but borrowed the text as I was immediately hooked by the beautiful drawings. This text offers a unique and different way to engage students in Chinese history, and I have used the text in both my studio classes as well as in a course entitled Global Studies, an Honors level team-taught course addressing art, literature, history and music for 11th grade students. While there is material very specific to time and place, there are other experiences that are universal to childhood everywhere. Which brings me to the exquisite Little White Duck: A Childhood in China by Na Liu and AndresVera Martinez, published in 2012 by Graphic Universe, a division of Lerner Publishing Group. What media would best represent their experience – collage, pencil, paint? Beautifully rendered images of the Chinese temples as well as more modern looking buildings encourage students to appreciate that China is a complex mix of old and new, and the images of Mao Zedong and Li Bai in the bottom corners of the page prompt questions of who these men are as the information provided by the author is written in Chinese characters. Older audiences, however, will recognize the story as an important, even unsettling historical record of a pivotal time. This being said, it is also affords the reader insights into the hardships and other challenges brought about through Mao's policies. Liu briefly mentions the one-child policy as “a new law” which her parents were able to avoid because her “little sister was already on the way.” When only one child is officially allowed to enroll in school, Liu’s sister becomes the sole student while Liu was lucky enough “to get a good start on my education” by joining her mother’s classroom in the elementary school in which her mother teaches.
