Like Helva, The Ship Who Sang, Carialle was born so physically disadvantaged that her only chance for life was as a shell person. Sadly most of those moments were so horribly hacked apart in the abridging that I cannot really say for this title. If I could I would return this book. Not if it is as poorly abridged as this one was. As I am now losing my sight, I am becoming forced to rely on audio books rather than print or ebooks. Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Narrated by: Helva had been born human, but only her brain had been saved and implanted into the titanium body of an intergalactic scout ship. Like Helva, The Ship Who Sang, Carialle was born so physically disadvantaged that her only chance for life was as a shell person. Listening to this abridged audio book felt like trying to listen to a Cliffs notes version of the story,and made me feel like I had wasted a credit purchasing it.
I love the ship books Ann McCarthy is one of my favourite author I read them all time. Anne McCaffrey. Thirteen-year-old Prince Kyril and Mags and Amily's 14-year-old son, Tory, "share" the Gift of Farsight - although neither of them are Chosen.

But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Etc. As this is a story I know very well (I have lost count of the number of times I've reread it), I'm frustrated by the editing. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. Damia had deflected a previous attack on the human worlds and sent the aliens into deep space. And again, like those others, Carialle decided she would strap on a spaceship.
Please for the love of all that matters stop selling poorly abridged books like this. Do not waste Audible credits or money purchasing this audio book until it is available unabridged.
I really enjoyed this story and Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors. Now she's bound for NX-928, and the last thing she needs is a "brawn" partner like Forister - he's the epitome of cynicism.
The abridging meant she didn't have to search very far....!!!

But this abridgement is poorly done. $14.95 a month after 30 days. Need help? This tale is narrated by television and stage actress Constance Towers ( Capitol). Also the plot takes a few confusing jumps as a result. Now, years later, Damia is a full-grown Talent of great power.
